What we are doing

GEWAS PROJECT 2006
GEWAS is Gulu Emergency Water and Sanitation. This is a project that is being funded by CARE international in uganda based in Gulu. For many of us who have visited Northern uganda and most specifically the Internally Displaced people camps (IDPS) in Gulu, are very much aware about the poor water and sanitation conditions in these protected camps. Statistic and evidences also show that the majority of the desease out break in the camps are a result of the alarming water and general sanitations. Majority of the people have poor pit latrines; and in most cases these pit latrines are located near water sources. This is because of the limited space left as the camps are over congested making people very vulnerable to some desease out break e.g Cholera, diarrhea, etc.

SURFACE-ENUF Project 2005
In 2005, SURFACE-Uganda recieved funding from Hope for African Children initiative (HACI) for its Eggs and Nutritious Foods "ENUF Project". This was a one years project that invloved the training of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children or their Care takers to in Income generation activties especially by Growing Nutritious Foods such as "BOO"-Green vegetabel, cabbages, onions, tomatoes, okra etc and also keeping layer birds ( exotic breed) that would act as a diet suppliment to the already green that they planted.

The ENUF project surpassed our targets and over 500 Orphans and Vulnerable children directly benefited from this initiative. The care takers were able to grow and collect enough eggs both for consumption and sale, procceeds from which were used to pay school fees of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and also buy scholarstic materials for them as well carter for domestic neccessities.

Situation in Gulu District of Northern UgandaMap of africa showing the position of Uganda and Gulu

Recently, an article which appeared in one of the local daily in uganda here, where a soldier negotiated with one mother And her daughter to have sex with both and give each of them 500 Uganda shillings ( an equivalent to 0.2 US Dollars) This mother accepted because she needed something to buy food for her children who were dying of hunger so that they could eat. This shows the level of suffering of the people here. As many prefer to live today without caring about dying HIV/AIDS tomorrow.

Worse still, Every evening more than 15,000 children leave their homes and come to town center to seek safety in fear of the rebels brutal activities. The children are sleeping on the street, centers, drainage, toilets, bathrooms and walking half naked and it is a very sad situation here

Gulu District in Northern Uganda comprises a population of 467,523 (National census 2002). This is close to 50% of the entire population in the Acholi sub region. Though the rest of Uganda experienced commendable economic progress during the NRM tenure, the Acholi sub region continued to lag far behind in all aspects due to the 17 year old rebellion. The result of this age-old insurgency is that the socio-economic infrastructure is completely destroyed. Close to one million persons have been displaced to live in Internally Displace Peoples (IDP) camps. The people in IDPCs have diminished capacity to support themselves, and depend on external support from UN-WFP and other Humanitarian agencies. The moral breakdown due to this social disruption is unspeakable, marked by high levels of alcohol consumption, sexual abuse, early marriages and defilement, STD and high potential risks of HIV/AIDS infection.

Problems, and Rationale for SURFACE to Intervene.

The 17-year-old insurgency in Gulu and Northern Uganda has completely disorganised the social and economic structure in the Acholi Sub Region. Close to one million persons live in Displaced peoples Camps. Cases of rape, teen-age marriages, child parents, economic prostitution and adultery are common due to economic hardships in the Camps. As the end of the insurgency comes in sight, and the displaced persons return to the villages, there is a huge potential of the HIV/AIDS infection taking a geometric spread, and thousands of Households already with AIDS (HWAs) unable to produce sufficient income and food for a dignified living. SURFACE Project aims at improving household and community awareness of HIV/AIDS, enhance capacity of households to become self reliant, and to revitalise the community fabrics from which households in need can be supported.
